Third graders are working hard in room 7. We have been learning and having fun along the way.
We are so lucky as State Representative Kokoruda came to read to us to celebrate Read Across America Day! She read The Polar Bear Who Wouldn't, Couldn't Swim. She taught us about the A, B, C, and D of water safety and gave us a challenge to teach our family and friends the safety rules too! Our Fractions unit has been going well. We have been exploring unit fractions, numerators, denominators, and understanding that the larger the denominator, the small the piece because you are partitioning the same size whole into more pieces. Out next math unit focusing on measurement starts next Wednesday! We will begin to explore linear measurement, liquid capacity, and mass/weight. Thank you for signing up for a conference time. I am excited to meet with each of you to discuss your child's progress and set goals for our final marking term of third grade. Today in class we learned about fractions, cursive letter S, and hybrid texts.
We also learned about the way to remember how to write the letter S in cursive. "Up like a jet. Down like a J. Travel away." We had a surprise visit from Ms. Carla. We think she is really fun and funny! Her favorite cursive letter is the letter S! Click here to watch Ms. Carla! In math workshop we learned 5 new stations including technology, perimeter and area, Jenga Division Facts, and Build a Robot. We learned about fact and opinion. We learned that an opinion is something that is someone's perspective. An opinion is something that is not a fact. You don't have to agree with an opinion. It can be argued. It is someone's personal judgement that can be argued. A fact is something that is reliable and trustworthy. It is not fake or made up. A fact can be proven and is true. A fact is a statement of truth. A fact is something that has actually happened. A fact is information. We used the Macmillan School Dictionary to help us figure out the difference between fact and opinion. Reminders:
Happy New Year! What a wonderful welcome into 2018. We had a great first day back. We worked with our multiplication tables, started our goal writing for 2018, and finished our holiday stories we started with Mrs. Mortensen. We are starting our third reading unit focused on nonfiction writing and text and starting our fourth math unit focused on area and perimeter. What a fabulous week! I have loved getting to know this class. We have gotten a jump start into learning about Native Americans, learning about math workshop stations, working together, rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, and creating classroom rules that can help us all become successful. We have earned Mystery Motivator all but 2 days this year so far! WAHOO! Tonight is open house. It is a chance for students in my class to show their loved ones their school and all that they are accomplishing here at Brewster School. It has only been 10 days of school and each one of these days has been filled with learning and laughs.
C Wow! What a wonderful start. This is going to be an awesome third grade year! We have already worked on chromebooks, learned about our first Native American tribe (The Sioux), and talked about hundred charts and rounding in math. I am so proud of the students in room 7 and the excellent behavior I am seeing in the classroom as well as the HALL behavior we are mastering. Hands at your side, Always walking, Looking forward, Lips are closed. I hope we can continue this wonderful momentum as we continue this year.
